What is Deep Tissue Massage Therapy?
Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage therapy, but deeper focused pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension, which brings new blood flow and healing. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine published a study which discovered that participants’ blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage. Additionally, another meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry posted that massage modalities like deep tissue therapy reduce stress hormone levels along with heart rate, all while boosting mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.
